The cravat was worn by a regiment of Croatian mercenaries under Louis XIII in the 17th century, named Royal Cravate by Louis XIV, who himself wore it. The word originated from the French word croate.
La cravate était un attribut vestimentaire particulier d'un régiment de hussards croates créé au XVIIe siècle sous Louis XIII, et nommé Royal Cravate par Louis XIV, qui l’a lui-même portée. Le mot tire son origine du mot croate.
Kravatu su u XVII. st. nosili hrvatski vojnici u službi Luja XIII, od kojih je Luj XIV. ustrojio pukovniju pod imenom Royal Cravate. Kravatu je i sam nosio. Riječ potječe od francuske riječi croate (“Hrvat”, “hrvatski”).
